Unprecedented, unparalleled, uncommon, unbelievable, and the list of “un’s” could go on and on.” So began President Favara’s announcement regarding Central's response to the COVID-19 crisis.
The 2020 semester began like so many others. COVID-19 was barely a story on the headline news, as spring classes started and seniors looked forward to their final semester. That ordinary start was forever transformed with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Its arrival derailed the very definitions of normal, traditional, and routine.
By mid-March, it was clear that mitigation strategies would become necessary. Students, leaving for Spring Break, were told to plan for an extended stay away from campus, as College leadership discerned the climate of the nation. While the original plan was to provide short-term remote teaching, the spread of COVID-19 forced the College to retain remote learning through the rest of the semester.
From the onset, President Favara reassured the student body, saying, “We will be working diligently on your behalf. You can rest assured that though the times are uncertain God remains faithful and Central Christian College stands with you…through His grace, we will weather this storm”.
And weather the storm we did. From students accessing coursework through remote channels, faculty who turned-on-a-dime to ensure rigor and value remained at the forefront of the learning experience, coaches sharing testimonies and inspirational videos, to staff working from home – in every way, the CCCK family huddled together and demonstrated the very essence of the character qualities we seek to instill in the lives of every student.
Unfortunately, with the suspension of residential operations, commencement was also postponed, uprooting the traditions and rituals that normally mark the transition from College. However, the Class of 2020 has reminded us that it is not the conventions of culture that define us, but the character within. It is not the robe, nor the tassel; it is not the march, nor the speeches; it is not even the paper that declares the journey complete – no ceremony or diploma can capture the character that has described this special class of students. In faith, we look to celebrate their achievements this fall, as part of Homecoming.
Currently, College leadership is planning on resuming residential operations this fall, albeit with a few modifications to ensure stability in light of COVID-19. A primary concern is a need for sufficient scholarship dollars to assist those students who were negatively affected by the pandemic. In a perfect storm of contagion, cutbacks, and confusion, it is through the grace of God and the generosity of our donors that will make the difference!
